Donald W. Seldin
Doctor of Humane Letters  1977
Status: conferred

Medical researcher, educator, and humanist, he combines in one man many men. A specialist in nephrology, his research, published in over 130 articles and contributing importantly to the understanding and treatment of kidney malfunction, has won him international recognition. Chairman for twenty-five years of the Department of Internal Medicine at Southwestern Medical School, he has built that department into one of the nation's foremost and has inspired colleagues and students toward that commitment to excellence which reveals the great teacher. In addition, his knowledge of the general human enterprise and his enthusiasm for literature, art, music, and philosophy make him a marvel to all who know him. The man who quotes Blake or Yeats in a lucid medical lecture is not only a man of parts but a whole man. For these reasons Southern Methodist University confers upon him the degree of Doctor of Humane Letters, honoris causa.
